Life In Haiti The Republic of Haiti is a mountainous country located on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Over the centuries, people from Africa, France, Spain, and other places in the Caribbean have contributed in different ways to Haiti’s long, dramatic history and rich, vibrant culture. Haiti was once a French colony and the people there speak French, Kreyòl (Creole) and Spanish (in border areas). Haiti is also the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. Haiti Outreach Program & Our Efforts Since 1999, the Haiti Outreach Program has worked to improve the lives of the people of Haiti. Our organization includes people of many backgrounds and faiths, working together with groups like Partners In Health and Sacred Heart Parish in Knoxville, Tennessee.
